“She went out again, Your Highness.”

“What happened?” I asked as I massaged my temples to rid myself of a headache.

“A man approached her. She announced her claim and I stepped in before anything could happen. Princess Annalice is quite a skilled fighter and I feared for the human’s life if he continued to push her.” The Epsilon finished his report and I dismissed him when necessary. Kira and Regor signaled that the posse was ready to go. I stepped from behind my desk and pulled on my suit jacket. The black Cadillac Escalade waited out back of the compound.

I slid into my seat and the driver pulled off. “Our informant said the robbery was taking place tonight. Let’s hope we can trust his intel. If you see anything going wrong, I want you to get out of there.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Darkness fell over Detroit. The Escalade pulled to a stop. Regor exited the vehicle first. He secured the area and then pounded on the hood to let us know everything was clear. Kira and I got out of the backseat. The driver moved the Escalade to a more concealed location as the three of us crept towards our destination. Sure enough, Vidali and six Betas stood beside a crate in the shipping dock. But instead of a robbery, we found something far more sinister. The crate was opened and black boxes were stacked to the ceiling. I could smell the chemicals coming off of the drugs.

There was no way that I would have sat by and watched Vidali bring drugs into my city. I signaled the others to move in and we approached the Blightwolf Alpha. “You know better than this. We all signed the treaties. No drugs, no pack wars, and we work with our human allies to keep these streets clean. Don’t put this city back to the way it was before. I won’t let you.”

“Let me?” Vidali asked. “Syrus was right, you know? Having a king is worthless. You could have joined me a year ago, but you turned my offer down. Treaties ain’t nothing but paperwork. No one gives a damn about that when the Seelie and Unseelie are slowly taking over Detroit.”

“We have our territories marked, Vidali. They’ve respected that so far, but if your little drugs spill over into their territory we’ll all be at risk.” I stepped closer to the Alpha and watched his men shuffle, observing me as though I didn’t have enough power to make the entire city go up in flames. “The Unseelie gets wind that you’re doing this, they’ll send their hunters after you.”

“You mean like they’ve done to that pretty little Adire of yours? You know, Annalice Vidali has a nice ring to it. Maybe when you’re knocked off your high horse, I’ll be there to comfort her.”

I saw red. My vision blurred and when I snapped out of it, Vidali’s men were pulling him away. Blood covered the Alpha’s face and my chest ached like I was kicked in the chest by a bull at the rodeo.
